How calls to action motivate your website visitors to take action

Imagine you walk into a store and find everything you're looking for. The products are great, the prices are fair, and the atmosphere is pleasant. But when you go to the checkout, you can't find any information about how to pay. What would you do?

Confused and frustrated, you would probably leave the store without buying anything. Many website visitors feel the same way when they don't find clear calls to action (CTAs). They know they should do something, but what exactly? Without clear instructions, they will feel uncertain and leave the site without leaving anything behind.

Call-to-actions are like signposts on your website. They show your visitors what to do next and guide them to the desired goal, whether it's a purchase, a newsletter subscription, or a download.

The 101 of good calls to action (instructions for action)

  • 1.Use strong verbs
Use strong verbs in your calls to action that encourage action. Instead of "Learn more," say "Try it now for free" or "Request a quote now." This gives your visitors a clear incentive to click on the button.
  • 2.Create urgency
Create a sense of urgency by offering limited-time offers or discounts. This motivates your visitors to act immediately before the opportunity is missed.
  • 3.Emphasize the benefits
In your calls to action, emphasize the benefits your visitors will receive from taking action. What do they get out of signing up, buying something, or downloading? Make it clear to them that it's worth taking action.
  • 4.Keep it simple
Keep your calls to action as simple and clear as possible. Use contrasting colors, an easy-to-read font, and a clear button. This way, visitors will immediately see what they need to do.
  • 5.Place them in different locations
Integrate your calls to action in different places on your website, for example at the end of blog posts, on product pages, or in the sidebar. This increases the chance that your visitors will see and click on them.
  • 6.Perform A/B testing
Test different versions of your calls to action to find out which ones work best. Try out different wording, colors, and designs and see which version generates the most clicks.
